Decine in rural way of life

Post by Aznavour » Wed Dec 21, 2005 11:52 pm

It occurs to me that part of the decline in rural life in St Davids is linked inextricably to the decline in agirultural fortunes in the area. Figures on the no of dairy cows and the no of acres of pembrokeshire early spuds ( nothing is so delicious) would be v interesting. Blame the decline on supermarkets - it is entirely their fault.

I have golden memories of picking spuds and baling hay/straw in the mid to late eighties - that was life. If only there was a way to bring these back. Watch this space.............. :)

Yeah lets bring back red phone boxes, lets get rid of the internet, hell why not bring back the horse and cart?

Times change. In case you hadn't noticed, there's no money in farming. Tourism is the best resource in the area now. In any case, you can still find excellent local potatoes if you drive through Llanrhian  .

Problem is, todays Tourist often becomes tomorrows colonists.
On the Census webpage, the stats say that 33% of the people living in Wales were born elsewhere.
Here's to the sons of the Gwerin
Who care not for Prince or for Queen
Who will haul down the Red White and Blue boys
And hoist up the Red White and Green.

You only have to look at the more rural parts of France and Italy to see how the Common Agricultural Policy can be used to make sure that tourism flourishes whilst still supporting a burgeoning traditional agricultural world. The fact is the government does not give a stuff about rural culture and is far to happy to let the multiples dictate that agriculture should die and they carry on sourcing cheap low grade imports from around the globe. However, you only have to read professor Krebs latest lectures to realise it will all turn full circle and in 20 years time there will be a food shortage. It is just such a shame that all that excellent farming knowledge will have fallen by the wayside in the intervening period. :(
