The Six Nations Trophy stood proudly in front of the St. Davids Trophy Cabinet, not because they had won it, but thanks to the good offices of the WRU Pembrokeshire representative, who had brought it to the Club when he came to support a pre-season friendly, played by St. Davids against the Welsh Champions and Cup winners, Neath on 16th August, 2008.
The game was played to raise funds for a local charity, "The Tom Davies Rehabilitaton Fund." Tom, a former Club second team captain, comitteeman and latterly vice-President of the Club, has been left a quadriplegic as a result of a fall at work necessitating extensive alterations having to be made to his home.
Rowland Phillips, a local boy and former St. Davids player was persuaded to bring his Neath squad west to play his local club of some twenty or so years earlier. Unfortunately, no one managed to arrange for the sun to shine on the game, which perhaps was to the good for St. Davids as it slowed the Neath threequarters down from 120 mph to 110 mph and enabled the would be tacklers at least to get to within touching distance.
Wonderful to relate, the crowds turned up in their droves and donated magnificently to the fund and despite torrential rain and a driving wind stayed to enjoy the proceedings.
The final result was in doubt for the first ten minutes, but, after checking with the referee,Andrew Miles and his two touch judges, we can announce that the score was:
Neath, a lot, St. Davids, not quite so many.
The real winner, however, was the Fund, which will benefit from a figure in excess of £2,000 and the grateful thanks of the St. Davids Chairman and committee go out to Rowland Phillips, who left, having been awarded his players' tie by St Davids, and the Neath players for turning out and playing in such apalling conditions, to those members of the committee and members who valiantly stood at the gates, collecting money and organising the Car Parking and to all those spectators who braved the conditions to support the cause.
